Human trafficking has been called a modern form of slavery with estimates of its victims reaching about 17,000 in the United States and close to 800,000 globally according to the U.S. Department of State. This insidious practice takes several forms -- most notably forced labor and sexual exploitation - with most victims being vulnerable women and children. Pope Benedict XVI, in his 2008 message for the annual World Day for Migrants and Refugees, highlighted young people in particular whose futures are jeopardized by being victims of human trafficking.
