The object of catechesis is communion with Jesus Christ. Catechesis leads people to enter the mystery of Christ, to encounter him, and to discover themselves and the meaning of their lives in him. (National Directory for Catechesis [NDC] [Washington, DC: United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2005], no. 19B)
This year Catechetical Sunday, September 16, 2007, will focus on the theme, “Catechesis: Encountering the Living Christ.” Those who have been delegated by the community to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect upon the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel as well as to rededicating himself or herself to this mission as a community of faith.
The materials from the bishops’ conference’s Department of Education are designed to assist you in celebrating this day and theme and promoting catechetical activity throughout the year.
For example:
Use the Family Conversations for Advent as a way to continue catechesis at the home and within the family on this these during the season of Advent.
Send a press release (sample text is included on the CD with the book) to the local secular and diocesan press. Include a printed version in your Sunday parish bulletin.
